2023 Season Update - When will the snow stop?!?!?!

On Monday, May 1st, I dropped my son off at school and headed up the street to Diamond Peak to enjoy the last day of the ski season before the resort closed. The skies were blue, the snow was decent, and the grooming was… not great. More importantly, the lake looked fabulous and inviting. I did a couple runs and called it a season.

At 4pm, the resort closed for the year. Aaaanndddd, of course, it started snowing a few hours later - one (hopefully) last salvo from Old Man Winter before Summer sweeps in in all her glory. Down here at lake level, it has snowed and rained every day this week, and up on “the hill” at least a foot of fresh powder has fallen. It’s the worst of both worlds: it’s windy and stormy, so we can’t row, but most of the resorts are closed, so we can’t ski.

There is, however, a silver lining. The lake is filling up rapidly. We still have a way to go before hitting “normal” for this time of year, but we’re closing the gap quickly:

I launched Ripple, my LiteBoat LiteRace Carbon 1x, from Burnt Cedar Beach back on April 20th and the water was already high enough that I didn’t have to pick my way around the rocks to get out to open water. For the first time in almost two years, there was zero skeg danger. All of which is to say that with a little more patience, we should have a great season in store. This will help a lot with the North Tahoe Regatta as well - there’s so much moisture in the soil that fire danger is nonexistent, and should stay that way all the way through the summer.

We can’t wait to see everyone on the water again soon! Stay tuned for details on our Summer 2023 group outings, including our first-ever Length of Tahoe row!
